Mangrove destruction: Over 50 cases this year in Mumbai

Almost 50 circumstances on the destruction of town’s mangroves, which play a key function in absorbing the impression of flooding and are wealthy in natural world, have been registered between January and July this 12 months.

The circumstances relate to clutter dumping, encroachment, hacking, blocking of tidal water to the mangroves and destruction of wildlife. Twenty-seven circumstances relate to destruction of wildlife, together with flamingo poaching and beaching of Dolphins. One other 12 circumstances are on particles dumping and eight on encroachment.

The circumstances have been registered below the Indian Forest Act, 1927; Setting Safety Act, 1986; Coastal Regulation Zone legal guidelines and Wildlife Safety Act, 1972.

Mumbai has 6,600 hectares (ha) of mangrove cowl, with 6,400 ha within the suburbs and 200 ha in south Mumbai. Of this, near 4,500 ha is on authorities land and relaxation in non-public areas. Navi Mumbai and the japanese finish of Thane creek have 1,471 ha of mangroves.

Round 4,225 ha of mangroves on authorities land has been declared as ‘reserve forest’. This gives extra safety because the legislation prohibits all human actions within the space, together with grazing and looking whereas giving extra enamel to the forest division to punish encroachers.

Final 12 months, the Bombay Excessive Courtroom had ordered the state authorities to launch legal motion towards those that destroy mangroves.

“Strict vigilance has been enforced in areas which had earlier reported high cases of mangrove destruction. In addition, swift implementation of environment protection laws and conservation efforts with the construction of a compound wall and round-the-clock surveillance has helped,” stated Neenu Somaraj, deputy conservator of forests, mangrove cell.
